What strategies support a TC at risk?

What specific strategies support a TC at risk of unsuccessful completion?

MTs should continue to model best practice, guide, facilitate and provide on-going formative feedback to TCs on their progress in the classroom.

  • Conduct open and honest communications with the TC using the principles of adult learning. A collegial, team approach is essential.
  • Make your thinking explicit in all aspects of your practice.
  • Use frequent think alouds at many times during the day to allow TC access to the rationales that you use in your thinking/problem solving process.
  • Have the TC explain information back to you to ensure clarity and understanding.
  • Provide continual encouragement.
  • Provide academic assistance prior to the lesson, such as access to teacher resource texts, manuals, materials etc.
  • Dialogue with the TC about the expectations you have for the lesson. Invite the TC to review what is required in order to ensure clarity.
  • Have the TC choose the specific area of focus for your observation (based on the criteria of the Action Plan) During the lesson, observe the TC teaching as per focused observation guidelines. Jot feedback notes for informal feedback  (stop, start, continue OR strength, area of concern, next step) Focus on positive, build on strengths, strategize next steps.
  • Conference with the TC immediately following the lesson or as soon as possible. Invite the TC to self-assess the lesson with specific attention to the area of predetermined focus.
  • Communication of feedback: clearly identify areas of strength, areas of need and next steps on a specific aspect of practice (see focused observation) after each lesson wherever possible.
  • Focus on positive, build on weaknesses.
  • Continue to monitor and provide specific, immediate feedback which identifies areas of strength, areas of need and next steps.
